What is this newsletter about?
Five Loaves Are Enough is a weekly newsletter that offers Gospel reflections from the perspective of a lay Catholic. I hope to release reflections on Monday for the upcoming Sunday’s Gospel reading, though the schedule may slip here and there.
For each reflection, I also plan to release a podcast, which includes both a contemplative reading of the Gospel passage and an audio version of the reflection, for those who are visually impaired or simply prefer an audio medium.
I may also offer other content, such as prayers or reflections, from time to time, but this is the general plan for now.
Who are you?
I am a lay Catholic living in Columbus, Ohio. I am a lawyer by day and do not have any advanced training in theology. I am, however, a postulant in the Columbus, Ohio, chapter of the Third Order Dominicans. For me, this newsletter is both a way to deepen my own connection with scripture and to do my part to spread the Word.
I welcome any feedback you might have along the way and look forward to journeying with you.
Why Five Loaves?
“Five Loaves Are Enough” is a riff on something Dallas Jenkins, the creator of The Chosen series, said in an interview. Jenkins said he once heard a voice say to him: “Dallas, it’s not your job to feed the 5,000. It is only to provide the loaves and fish.”
There a several reasons why, when I decided to start this site, I thought of this quote. For one thing, I’ve always felt that I don’t know the Bible, or the Catechism, or … well, you name it . . . well enough to share my faith with others. And this quote reminds me that God works with what we have. The important thing is to offer it. For another, at least in John’s account, the miracle of loaves and fishes is only possible because a young lad offers up what he had—which reminds me that faith only multiplies when it is shared. And so, here we are!
What will you do with my donation?
Should you choose to donate, I will use your donation to defray the expense of running the site, including the cost of licenses for podcast materials, domain hosting, and so on. Whatever funds are leftover will go directly to a charity to benefit the poor. I also commit to posting here a monthly report on how funds are used, should there be any donations.
Regardless of whether you choose to or can donate, I am committed to keeping the content on this site free and available to everyone. So welcome, and I hope you enjoy the newsletter!
